Single Cavity Mold or Multi Cavity Mold: Which is Best for Your Project?

Create Time: 20-12-2017

When manufacturing plastic products by injection molding, you can use single-cavity or multi-cavity molds. What is the difference between the two and how to choose the best one for your injection project? The following is some knowledge about molds.

Ⅰ. The difference between single cavity mold and multi cavity mold

A multi-cavity mold consists of multiple cavities. Therefore, multiple parts are manufactured per injection cycle. In a multi-cavity mold, the initial investment cost is very high, but this higher tool cost can be compensated by a lower unit part molding cost. The single cavity mold consists of one cavity. Therefore, one component is produced per injection cycle. For small batches of plastic parts, single cavity molds are recommended. So the difference between single-cavity mold and multi-cavity mold is that single-cavity mold will produce one cycle, while multi-cavity mold produces more than one product per cycle.

Ⅱ. What is a cavity in molding?

Cavity injection molding is a series of events in the injection molding process of plastic parts, called the injection molding cycle. When the mold is closed, the cycle will begin, and then the polymer will be injected into the mold cavity. Once the cavity is filled, pressure is maintained to compensate for material shrinkage.

Ⅲ. Comparison of advantages between single cavity mold and multi cavity mold

Advantages of multi-cavity molds:

1. Due to the short delivery time of each batch, the required quantity of products will be completed faster. Multi-cavity molds can produce more products with the same mold under the condition of ensuring the injection volume;

2. In most cases, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a four-cavity mold is lower than that of four single-cavity molds.

3. Multi-cavity molds make more effective use of cycle time;

4. The main scale benefits of the stabilization process;

5. Lower parts price for multi-cavity molds.

Advantages of single cavity mold

1. Compared with multi-cavity injection molds, single-cavity molds have lower manufacturing costs.

2. The single cavity mold is easy to design and manufacture.

3. Molders and tool manufacturers can better control the injection molding process. This helps to improve the quality of injection molded plastic parts.

4. Sometimes two single cavity molds are used instead of one double cavity mold. Because in the event of a failure, an injection mold can still run.
